What Does “Awakening” Mean?

ACIM Workbook Lesson 144 – for Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Affirmation:  “My mind holds only what I think with God.”

Selected Passage:

“There is no love but God’s.
“The world I see holds nothing that I want.  (WB275)”

Reflections:

1 – The World Controlled by the Ego

We are told in ACIM that this world does not hold anything of value.  The real world does, and by “this world” I mean the world that is controlled and dominated by the ego.  We are not asked to give up the valuable; there is nothing valuable in a world controlled by egoistic thinking.  We are asked to turn to God for the love that we so desperately want.

2 – What Does the “Real World” Mean?

What does the “real world” really mean?  It means glimpses of sanity–love, joy, peace, safety, quietness.  We are told that when the real world has become habitual to us, God Himself will reach down and lift us up to Awakening.

3 – What Does “Awakening” Mean?

What does “Awakening” mean?  It is that ineffable state in which no thought makes us unhappy (a statement made by an enlightened current spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle, in a CD entitled, “Even the Sun Will Die”).  Eckhart asserts that more and more people are experiencing Awakening, that frequently he hears from them.  He feels that he is in a kind of epicenter of this new experience, which, because of his books and his teaching, has encouraged people to turn to him when they experience what he did when he was 30 years old.  Awakening is being sane, finally.  Before it comes fully, we will catch glimpses from time to time.  But the timing is ultimately up to God.  We cannot awaken ourselves.

Prayer:

Dear Mother/Father,

Sometimes I feel very far from Awakening, and we are told by some inspirational writers for ACIM that the closer that we come, the more the ego rears its ugly head.  Then it is easy to become discouraged.  With Your help, I would not become discouraged today.

Be with me as I seek to walk through this day in peace.  Please help me to forgive myself for my misdeeds, and may my significant others also forgive me.  I will often make mistakes, until I am home in You.  I would be at home in You sooner rather than later.

Amen.
