We Must Take the Role Assigned to Us

ACIM Workbook Lesson 169 – for Saturday, June 18, 2011

Affirmation:  “By grace I live.  By grace I am released.”

“Suffice it, then, that you have work to do to play your part.  The ending must remain obscure to you until your part is done.  It does not matter.  For your part is still what all the rest depends on.  As you take the role assigned to you, salvation comes a little nearer each uncertain heart that does not beat as yet in tune with God.  (WB324)”

Reflections:

This passage is reminiscent of William Shakespeare, in that we are seen to have “parts” to play in the drama that is being carried out on earth.  We do not know how the ending will turn out, other than that it will be God’s way.  He does not bring tragedy to our world, if we see tragedies, but he does determine the ultimate outcome, which will be joyous.  This is  a promise of the Manual, in discussing the ending of our world.

We are responsible for the salvation of our brothers and sisters.  If we temporarily understand more, let us be thankful and then share, if they are willing, with others.  We are not called to proselytize.  Some are ready only for a smile or a prayer, sent on their behalf to God (an ACIM tenet).

Our hearts are indeed uncertain until they take their rest in God.  When we have recognized that the Holy Spirit makes decisions that are in our best interests, then we are well on the way to ultimate understanding.  We are never coerced, but who would fail to follow guidance when it is seen to be what we want most in all the world?

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

I ask to know my role.  Sometimes I have thought that I knew it, but I ask anew this day.  My real role is in accord with Your will.  Help me to carry it out with Your grace enabling me.

Be with me this day as I reflect on the role that You would have me play.  Help me not to take myself too seriously as I contemplate this, though it is a serious matter.  Help all of us to bring salvation a little nearer to this beleaguered world.

Amen.
