Peace So Deep and Quiet

ACIM Workbook Lesson 305 – for Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Affirmation:  “There is a peace that Christ bestows on us.”

“Who uses but Christ’s vision finds a peace so deep and quiet, undisturbable and wholly changeless, that the world contains no counterpart.  (WB452)”

1 – Christ’s Vision Sees the Real World

Christ’s vision sees the real world, the world informed by the Holy Spirit by following His guidance.  It is not the egoic world, definitely not.  The real world, reality, is God’s world, and it behooves us to ask to spend more time there.  If we seek peace, calm, tranquility, and serenity, we will automatically seek silence more.  We will live in God’s presence.  And we will live the way of A Course in Miracles and A Course of Love (viewed by some as a sequel to ACIM).

2 – The Peace that Passeth Understanding

This peace is, I believe, the “peace that passeth understanding” of the New Testament.  Jesus has not really changed in 2000 years; he has simply adapted with the times.  Perhaps there is much in the New Testament that was a misreading of his message, and, if so, the world was ready for his channeling of A Course in Miracles.

3 – Living the Workbook of A Course in Miracles

Now that we are far along in the year of the Workbook for Students, we know better the tenets of ACIM, and it is up to us to incorporate these truths so that we actually live them.  We will find this peace that is “deep and quiet, undisturbable and wholly changeless” (see above).

4 – The Self Lives in the Real World

May we ask for the Self, the Christ (not Jesus alone), to bestow on us today this peace that we so crave.  This Self has never been incarnated; it is the real Self upon which we can draw for the “elevated Self of form” (from A Course of Love).  May we live today in a Self that is ever closer to being sustained.  And this will be the truly real world, the true reality.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would see with the vision of my Self, the higher Self that is known as the Christ.  I would not attach egoic notions to this appellation.  I would remain only myself, knowing that it is You who effect change in me.  Jesus has pointed out the Way in A Course in Miracles.  Please, today, help me to live what he has pointed out.

I would live in the real world, the world of peace, joy, harmony, and reconciliation with all of my brothers and sisters.  Let me not even hint at attack or anger today.  This, I ask, is to be a day of special dedication to You.  Be with me as I make this dedication to You and Your peace.

Perception = A Mirror = Not a Fact

ACIM Workbook Lesson 304 – for Monday, October 31, 2011

Affirmation:  “Let not my world obscure the sight of Christ.”

“Perception is a mirror, not a fact.  and what I look on is my state of mind, reflected outward.  I would bless the world by looking on it through the eyes of Christ.  And I will look upon the certain signs that all my sins have been forgiven me.  (WB451)”

1 – Projection Makes Perceptions

This is a repetition of the oft-repeated “projection makes perception.”  It is the way in which we create our own reality.  There is no other answer.  The Holy Spirit will give the Answer when we are ready, and we can pray that this blessing will come soon.

2 – May We See with the Eyes of Christ

If perception is a mirror of our state of mind, it behooves to be careful what we entertain in our minds.  This would encourage us to seek out uplifting reading, good entertainment, happy experiences.  We can do much to effect this.  When we see with the eyes of Christ, we will see a new and joyful world.  The old will no longer attract us, the old with its egoistic notions–notions which led only to pain.  May we find the way today.  May we delay no longer.

3 – Our Forgiven “Sins”

When we know that our “sins” have been forgiven, we will realize that we are still as God created us.  We are innocent, though this may be one of the most difficult tenets of the Text to incorporate into our worldview.  We will bless ourselves and others.  We will know love intimately for the first time.

Dear Father/Mother,

May I see with the eyes of Christ today, and may I not be tempted to attach any egotism to this.  It is Your Will that I have vision.  May my projections make a perception that is good and true, loving and peaceful.  Be with me today as I attempt to make changes that will influence my world to be a better place.

May we come to understand what it means to say, “projection makes perception.”  We do not often understand fully what this means.  I would keep its meaning, that this world is simply an illusion that I have projected, close to my heart today.

Christ Reborn = Our Real Self

ACIM Workbook Lesson 303 – for Sunday, October 30, 2011

Affirmation:  “The holy Christ is born in me today.”

“Let Christ be welcomed where He is at home.  And let Him hear the sounds He understands, and see but sights that show His Father’s Love.  Let Him no longer be a stranger here, for He is born again in me today.  (WB451)”

1 – What It Means for Christ to Be Born in Me

When Christ is born again in us, we are living the Self that is our real Self.  We are no longer the little self (as I have called it), the egoic self.  May we take this step into the sunlight today.

2 – Welcome the Self and Know Peace

If we welcome the Christ, the Self that we really are, we will know peace.  We will no longer be followed about by dreams, illusions, of disaster.  Even if bad things happen (and they may, though they are less likely), then we will rise above, with the help of the Holy Spirit.  We create our own reality, and we will not miscreate anymore.  We will know how to live well, and we will not dwell on mistakes and misdeeds.  We will forgive ourselves and others, and then we will create aright in our little world.  Joy follows inexorably.

3 – We Create Our Own Reality

Jane Roberts, in the “Seth” (an entity she channeled) books, often said that we “create our own reality.”  Jesus says the same in ACIM.  And that reality will be good if we learn how to think with God.  We do not have to suffer in silence.  We do not have to suffer at all (though we may, for we are fallible).  When we dream the happy dreams the Holy Spirit brings (from the Workbook), we are being prepared for the real world, which sees only good.  Mother Teresa wrote about seeing “Jesus in all his distressing disguises.”  She certainly saw much suffering in her life, even in her own life.  But she kept the faith.  And Jesus would ask us to do the same.

Dear Father/Mother,

Help me to understand my Self, Who is Meant by the Christ.  These final thoughts in the Workbook are puzzling, and I need Your help not to let the ego intrude.  None of us has anything that everyone else does not have.  We are all One.  Help me to know that to say that Christ is born in me is not an egoic statement.

Be with us today as we seek to create the reality in which we live.  May that real world be inhabited by each of us for longer and longer periods of time.  We need to let this illusory world fall from our sight and be replaced with a seeing that is almost incomprehensible to us now.  May we look only with love, and may we have the vision that You would have us understand.

Fear Disappears when Love Comes

ACIM Workbook Lesson 302 – for Saturday, October 29, 2011

Affirmation:  “Where darkness was I look upon the light.”

“Father, our eyes are opening at last.  Your holy world awaits us, as our sight is finally restored and we can see.  We thought we suffered.  But we had forgot the Son whom You created.  Now we see that darkness is our own imagining, and light is there for us to look upon.  Christ’s vision changes darkness into light, for fear must disappear when love has come.  Let me forgive Your holy world today, that I may look upon its holiness and understand it but reflects my own.  (WB450)”

1 – Out Eyes Are Now Open

This lovely prayer summarizes much from A Course in Miracles.  We see when our eyes are open, and we do not “see” at all when we have sightless eyes that see an illusory world.  Jesus is preparing us to see the real world, the reality that God would have us see.  When we have seen little edges of light around familiar objects, and perhaps the Great Rays have visited us, we will know that we are following along the right pathway.  It may be years before the real world arises before our eyes, but arise it will.  The certainty of our right direction, under the Holy Spirit’s guidance, assures this.

2 – Fear Has Disappeared

When fear has disappeared, we will know that we are on the way home.  This too may take a long time, but as we have noted in previous blogs, the pace and timing of the universe is different from our own.  We don’t know how long a “day” is in God’s time.

3 – Forgive = Doing Our Part

If we forgive, we are doing our part.  We do not have, even, to forgive totally, because Jesus stands at the end of the road to correct the errors that we have not been able to correct.  Just a little willingness is all ACIM asks of us.  But it is enough.  The work of the Holy Spirit is infinitely more than what we do, and we are blessed that this is true.  We would in all likelihood mess everything up, if left to our own devices.  (Much of the above are paraphrases from ACIM.)

Dear Father/Mother,

I would walk with open eyes, seeing with vision, today.  I would not believe that this world is real, that my eyes show me a real world, but I will believe that when I see love, I am seeing reality.  May I experience love today wherever I go.  May I do my part to have this experience be mine.  Thank You for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Who will lead me in the right way to look without error.

May I forgive if I believe myself wronged today.  May I know that even this experience is one that, on some level, I have chosen.  We are always living the world that we have made.  May I choose today to make that world a loving, peaceful, joyous place, and may I confront my brothers and sisters with only goodness in my heart.

Thank You for the guidance that will enable me to have a good day.

God Himself Shall Wipe Away All Tears

ACIM Workbook Lesson 301 – for Friday, October 28, 2011

Affirmation:  “And God Himself shall wipe away all tears.”

“Father, unless I judge I cannot weep.  Nor can I suffer pain, or feel I am abandoned or unneeded in the world.  This is my home because I judge it not, and therefore is it only what You will.  Let me today behold it uncondemned, through happy eyes forgiveness has released from all distortion.  Let me see Your world instead of mine.  And all the tears I shed will be forgotten, for their source is gone.  Father, I will not judge Your world.  (WB450)”

1 – Judging = Lose Our Way

Judging is one sure way to lose our way.  We can see the happy dreams of the Holy Spirit for years, even, and then drop into judging, and feel lost again.  We are not lost, actually; we never are.  But we will feel lost, and we will not feel the “felt presence of Being” (from Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now).

2 – No Weeping, Pain, Feeling Abandoned or Unneeded

This is a reassuring passage if we see that we cannot weep, suffer pain, feel abandoned or unneeded–unless we judge.  This statement seems almost too good to be true.

3 – Vow to Judge Nothing that Occurs

But try it out.  For one day, vow to judge nothing that occurs.  If we start to judge, we must say firmly (even shout) inwardly, “Stop!”  And watch to see if the day does not unfold better than any previous one in which judgment has gotten a toehold.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would not judge today.  I know that I tend to judge when I am stressed–as I tend to get angry or to attack when in that same frame of mind.  All of this foolishness, and it is foolishness, is the extent–on any given day–that I have forgotten You, that I have let the ego rule again in my little world.  I would choose anew today, on this day that you warn me against judging.  The solution is always to allow my Guide, the Holy Spirit, to judge the right pathway for me to take.  His is also the means by which other people ought only to be judged.  It is never for me to do.  Help me to remember this truth wherever I walk today.

I would leave aside pain in all its forms.  I especially would leave aside anxiety, which is a particularly potent form of pain for me.  I would turn to You for the equanimity that allows a free and easy walk through this world.

Help me to stay close to You all day long.  Thank You.

Heaven Is Restored to Me

ACIM Workbook Lesson 300 – for Thursday, October 27, 2011

Affirmation:  “Only an instant does this world endure.”

“We see Your holy world today.  For we, Your loving Sons, have lost our way a while.  But we have listened to Your Voice, and learned exactly what to do to be restored to Heaven and our true Identity.  And we give thanks today the world endures but for an instant.  We would go beyond that tiny instant to eternity.  (WB448)”

1 – How to Avoid Mistakes

We have listened to “Your Voice,” which is God’s Holy Spirit, or the Universal Inspiration (from the Text).  The more quickly we listen, when confronted with a decision point, the more likely we are to follow in God’s way.  We will not be as likely to make mistakes; indeed, making mistakes is impossible when we learn to discern the Holy Spirit’s prompting.

2 – How Does the Holy Spirit Prompt?

How does He prompt?  The most accessible to me is what I call my intuition.  Other ways are a “feeling” that I ought to do a certain thing, a thought that will not leave my mind about a way to proceed, an inner knowing of what God is pointing out for me to do.  Many find the Holy Spirit’s guidance in silence, when communing with God.  An inner knowing overcomes us, and we just recognize, without strain, the next step to take.

3 – This World Can Be Seen as Holy

This world is indeed holy when seen through the eyes of God.  We wander aimlessly about this world until we turn, once again, to God.  We may wander away many times in the course of a lifetime, but, not matter, as long as we ask forgiveness and seek the pathway again.  We would not wander aimlessly down many pathways, although the world offers many.  This would be meaningless, as well as a crucial delay on the road to salvation.  We do not need to follow all the pathways of this world, only to decide in the end that God’s pathway is best.  We can decide this right now, and it would behoove us to do so.

Dear Father/Mother,

May I follow the Holy Spirit’s prompting consistently today.  May I not drop into defiance.  May I know that He always shows me the way that I would choose, if I had the knowledge that He does.  May I be flexible, even when my reason seems to be listening to the ego that I would disown.

Be with us today as we go about our business in this world.  May we see the world as holy, as You see it.  May this day be a glorious one.  And may I do what I can do to assist my brothers and sisters to see the holiness that You point out to me.

Thank You for always staying by my side.

Illusions Cannot Dim My Holiness

ACIM Workbook Lesson 299 – for Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Affirmation:  “Eternal holiness abides in me.”

“Father, my holiness is not of me.  It is not mine to be destroyed by sin.  It is not mine to suffer from attack.  Illusions can obscure it, but can not put out its radiance, nor dim its light.  It stands forever perfect and untouched.  (WB448)”

1 – Are We Holy?

We are hesitant to call ourselves “holy.”  We do not seem worthy, regardless of how far along the pathway we have walked.  We think somehow that it is an unseemly thing to say or even to think.

2 – Our Retreat into Feverish Dreams

But Jesus would say that this is the arrogance of the ego.  We are actually holy because God has called us thus.  We have not changed our Self since we were created.  We have merely retreated into feverish dreams, illusions, maya.  But we are still as God created us (from the Workbook).  We are still holy.

3 – Our Holiness = Not Changed by Detour into Fear

Our holiness has not been touched by the detour into fear that we made at the time that we thought that we separated from God (paraphrases from the Text).  We have not, it is true, been in communication with God, for we have been asleep.  But we can awaken, and He will effect this for us when we are ready.  Even early on, we will see glimpses of Awakening before it is sustained.  And A Course of Love is all about the elevated Self of form, the walking in this world of an Awakened individual.  (Many view A Course of Love as a sequel to ACIM, one that was also channeled by Jesus.)

Dear Father/Mother,

May I feel humble as I retreat from arrogance and contemplate the idea that I am still the holy individual that You created.  May I not let these thoughts cause the ego to reemerge.  May I know that I am still as You created me, though I have detoured into fear, and I have made mistakes that beg for correction.

Help my correction to be gentle.  Jesus says that we do not have to learn through pain.  I ask today that I learn and experience all that You would wish for me, in the manner that You wish.  I do realize that You would not have me suffer pain, and even that You do not grant any credence to this illusion, because it is illusion.  Help me to learn through rewards, which can only come when I have surrendered to Your Teacher, the Holy Spirit.

Thank You for leading me this far, and thank You that my detour into fear has been as benign as it has been.  This does not mean that I will never again know pain, only that it is unnecessary.  May I follow in the Way that You point out to me through Your Universal Inspiration, the Holy Spirit.

I Love You, Father, and I Love Your Son

ACIM Workbook Lesson 298 – for Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Affirmation:  “I love You, Father, and I love Your Son.”

“Father, I come to You today, because I would not follow any way but Yours.  You are beside me.  Certain is Your way.  And I am grateful for Your holy gifts of certain sanctuary, and escape from everything that would obscure my love for God my Father and His holy Son.  (WB447)”

1 – God’s Sanctuary

We need God’s sanctuary.  Indeed, when times are tough (and they are tough for everyone at some point in life, and maybe at many points), we need God’s sanctuary more than ever.  We need this sanctuary more than anything else.  Why do we delay to find it?

2 – We Don’t Have to Depend on Ourselves Alone

We think that we are somehow failing if we don’t depend on ourselves, to gird ourselves to be strong.  But this is usually egoic strength, which is inherently weak, a two-edged sword (from the Text).  We need a defense that cannot be turned against us (a Text tenet), and this is the defense that God provides, though it is not called a “defense.”  It is called salvation.

3 – How to Healed so that We Love Ourselves Properly

Loving God and loving His Sons and Daughters go hand-in-hand.  We will also love more fully when we have a genuine and non-egoic love for ourselves.  If we do not feel a genuine, holy love for ourselves, we have damaged parts of our psyche that will hinder our finding God.  And if this is true for us, we need to pray, get counseling, read widely, study ACIM and A Course of Love, read inspirational books and pamplets, read the Bible.  There is almost no end to the manner in which we can be healed, but a simple turning to God is often all that is needed.  Do not leave God out of the equation, or we will simply search long and hard, finding nothing that is meat for our spirits.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would not turn to the ego for love of myself, but I would turn to You for love of both myself and my brothers and sisters.  May we turn to You, to depend on You.  This is not weakness, but the greatest strength.  I know that it is a fallacy to believe that it is weakness to believe in You and to depend on Your Grace.  Help me today to call upon You whenever I feel a need–and even when I am feeling confident.  You are always there for me, and You will allow me to step aside from the ego.

Be with me as I walk through this day.  I will never be healed until I learn how to love in the right way, and I ask for You to help me to understand this blessing of love today.

Thank You for holding me by the hand, and keeping fear far from my thoughts.

Everything I Give I Give Myself

ACIM Workbook Lesson 297 – for Monday, October 24, 2011

Affirmation:  “Forgiveness is the only gift I give.”

“Forgiveness is the only gift I give, because it is the only gift I want.  And everything I give I give myself.  This is salvation’s simple formula.  (WB447)”

1 – Jerry Jampolsky’s Emphasis

Today’s passage is a repetition in many places in A Course in Miracles.  The “everything” that we give are the intangibles, because material things do diminish as they are given away.  Jerry Jampolsky made this clear in Love Is Letting Go of Fear, his very first book on ACIM.

2 – Forgiveness = Answer to All Troubles

Forgiveness is the answer to all of our troubles.  We do not actually need our forgiveness, but in this world we need the practice of forgiveness.  God does not forgive us, because He has never condemned us (a Text tenet).  So in a broken and fractured world, we do need to forgive both ourselves and our brothers and sisters.  This done repeatedly will clear our minds and help us to feel justified before God.  So it is that we give a gift to ourselves, one that we need very much.  It is our way home.

3 – Salvation’s Simple Formula

“This is salvation’s simple formula”:  So says the passage quoted above in Workbook Lesson 297.  If we remember this simple formula, all will go well with others, even if things on some level seem to be falling apart.  We will rise above the terror and find peace that comes straight from God.

Dear Father/Mother,

May I recognize that forgiveness is all that I need and want.  May I recognize that as I give forgiveness to others, it is given to myself.  May the blessings of this simple exchange stay with all of my circle today.

May I recognize that salvation is actually simple, even though the ego would have it hidden in a maze of complexity, thus making it seem hard to achieve.  May I know that salvation is Your gift, only Yours.  And that with You backing me, salvation is always immediate–once we ask for it.

Thank You.

May the Holy Spirit Speak through Me Today

ACIM Workbook Lesson 296 – for Sunday, October 23, 2011

Affirmation:  “The Holy Spirit speaks through me today.”

“I would be savior to the world I made.  For having damned it I would be set free, that I may find escape, and hear the Word Your holy Voice will speak to me today.  (WB446)”

1 – We “Made” the World that We See

Here we find once again that we “made” the world that we see.  We project from within, outward, and there we find the illusions that we perceive.  There is nothing outside of us, part of the worldview of A Course in Miracles.

2 – May We Help Save the World

We must be savior to this world.  We have often thought of Jesus as the savior, but only time separates what he is to what we will be.  And he needs our cooperation in saving this world.  We grew up hearing such things as this in our churches, and we still hear the same thing, even in mainstream churches that have nothing to do with ACIM.

3 – Lead the World Away from Disaster

We have “damned” this world.  We have helped to make the chaos in which we find ourselves.  And we would rectify these mistakes now.  Let us wait not one second longer.  Reach out to the person closest to you (whether by touch, phone, e-mail, or texting), and begin the process of leading this world away from disaster and on to a Heaven on earth for all who live here.

Dear Father/Mother,

It is a daunting idea that all of us are meant to save the world.  Many have thought this, and instead have made more chaos.  May we follow only what guidance, true guidance, gives to us to do, and may we not make mistakes that will hurt our brothers and sisters.  May we listen to the Holy Spirit as we seek to be saviors, along with Jesus, of the world that we “made.”  As projection makes perception, may we see the world change from a place of chaos to a place of peace.

Be with me as I make decisions today.  I still get irritated when my best intentions are rebuffed.  May I always remember that this world is an illusion, a dream, and that I am creating the dream in which I find myself.  I can forgive this dream, and not feel pain, when I am rebuffed.  There is madness afoot.  It is not for me to judge this madness, but to ask the Holy Spirit to offer His peace to everyone whom I encounter.  Help me to be an instrument of His peace.  Thank You for being there for me when times seem depressed.  I know that times do not have to remain depressed.  My prayer, my communing, with You can change my demeanor to one of joy.  Help me to receive joy of You now.

Fear Appears in Many Forms, but Love Is One

ACIM Workbook Lesson 295 – for Saturday, October 22, 2011

Affirmation:  “The Holy Spirit looks through me today.”

“Redemption must be one.  As I am saved, the world is saved with me.  For all of us must be redeemed together.  Fear appears in many different forms, but love is one.  (WB446)”

1 – We Must All Be at Home in God

We will not be free of this world until all others have reached to the God within.  We are One, and this is as it should be.  Early psychic writers have said the same thing, notably Ruth Montgomery, who channeled “Guides.”  We are pulled backward by our brothers and sisters until we walk along beside them, and take steps in tandem.  Jesus says in A Course in Miracles that we sometimes think that we will walk a little ahead, or a little behind, but then he indicates that this is faulty thinking.  We can proceed if we alter our stride in this manner.  We take our brother or sister by the hand, and together in happiness we walk to God.

2 – We Are All One

When we love others, we are loving because we know that we are all one.  We do not truly love until we realize this (an interpretation, not stated in ACIM).

3 – We Are Here for Salvation

We are here for salvation, forgiveness, happiness.  And salvation and redemption are close in meaning.  Let us ask for our redemption today.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would do what I can to bring others to You today.  But I would not impose myself or my beliefs on my brothers and sisters.  Help me to know when to speak and when to be silent.  Help me to know who is ready to hear any words that I might say about You and salvation.

May all of us find You sooner rather than later.  This world knows much suffering, and we all need to find healing.  Help me to fully realize that the Answer to healing lies in what the mind thinks, not what the body does.  May You rest gently in my mind and bring it home to You.

Thank You for granting me the warmth of Your companionship today.  May I share that warmth with the significant others whom I see or touch today.

My Body = Wholly Neutral

ACIM Workbook Lesson 294 – for Friday, October 21, 2011

Affirmation:  “My body is a wholly neutral thing.”

“My body, Father, cannot be Your Son.  And what is not created cannot be sinful nor sinless; neither good nor bad.  Let me, then, use this dream to help Your plan that we awaken from all dreams we made.  (WB445)”

1 – We Made the Physical

We made the body and the rest of the physical world.  This is part of the theology of A Course in Miracles, but we do  not understand this assertion.  We cannot, while still in this world.  We make, but God creates.  And only what is created is real.  Only what is created is lasting.

2 – Dreams

We also made the dream in which we find ourselves lost.  We would awaken from this dream, sooner rather than later.   We begin to awaken from the dream that we made when we accept the “happy dreams the Holy Spirit brings” (from the Workbook).  We are eased in our minds, so that we do not fear Awakening.

3 – The World Is Illusion

The world that we see is illusion, or maya (in Eastern terminology).  So nothing that happens in illusion is real, and it is on this solid foundation that forgiveness becomes real.  If nothing real has happened when our brother or sister acts against us, then forgiveness is the only sane response.  It protects our minds, and it protects our brothers and sisters.  We and they are issuing a call for help, and forgiveness offers this help as a first step.

4 – Vanities of the Body

We put too much emphasis upon the body.  It is true that in this world, it is wise to be neat and clean in appearance, but usually we go far beyond this practical necessity.  We adorn the body with meaningless trinkets of gold and silver, bracelets that are meaningless, watches that are gold and diamonds, rings that sparkle with the false value of wealth.  Why do we do this?  It is our own self image that is at fault.  We think, from the ego, that we are not worthy unless we adorn ourselves.

5 – The Elaborate Frame that Surrounds Illusion

This picture is described in the Text as an elaborate frame that covers a tiny picture of an illusion, where nothing really is.  The real picture is framed with a slim frame, and it shows off the picture framed in light, the reality in which we ought to be found.  These images in ACIM are powerful indeed, and they carry messages that we can spread to greater meanings in other parts of this illusory world.  Nobody needs to live long in illusion.  Ask for the real world, and glimpses, at least, will be given us.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would not look to any elaborate frame that masks the illusion that it frames.  I would see reality instead.  May I invite the happy dreams from the Holy Spirit, knowing that these are precursors to Awakening.  May I understand, intuitively, what is meant by the assertion that we ourselves made this world.  It is not real, for only what God created is real.

Help me to walk in the light, the light of reality which is framed by a slim frame–a frame seen in light.  May these images–the elaborate frame surrounding nothing, and the light frame offering a picture of reality–tease my mind out of thought today.  May I come to recognize the real world when I see its glimpses, and I feel its peace and joy.

Thank You for always being here for me.  I ask for many things, but You and Your Presence are all that I really need.

The Real World

ACIM Workbook Lesson 293 – for Thursday, October 20, 2011

Affirmation:  “All fear is past and only love is here.”

“Father, let not Your holy world escape my sight today.  Nor let my ears be deaf to all the hymns of gratitude the world is singing underneath the sounds of fear.  There is a real world which the present holds safe from all past mistakes.  And I would see only this world before my eyes today.  (WB445)”

1 – How Long Will We See the Real World?

We would see the real world.  A Course in Miracles is not specific about what this means.  We are told that the real world will arise before our eyes, and then God will act swiftly to reach down and lift us up to Awakening.  Time, though, is not measured our way.  We may see the real world for awhile before we are awakened.

2 – What Is the Real World Like?

The real world is a world of peace, serenity, calm, and tranquility.  A place of love.  No ego intrudes on this idyllic scene.  We are almost at home.  We have been dreaming the happy dreams the Holy Spirit brings (a Workbook tenet), and we are relaxed enough to welcome, not to fear, Awakening.  The Holy Spirit has brought us this far so that we will not be terrified by the experience of Awakening.  We are ready.

3 – Let Us Ask to See the Real World Today

Ask today to see the real world.  I don’t think we will be disappointed.  We may see glimpses of the real world many times before the vision is sustained (an ACIM tenet).  The Holy Spirit prepares us; we do not have to make elaborate plans to prepare ourselves (an ACIM tenet).  Let the Holy Spirit guide today to the reality that God wants us to see.

Dear Father/Mother,

I ask, simply, to see glimpses of the real world today.  If there is anything that I need to do to sustain this awareness, please, may my Guide, the Holy Spirit, let me know what to do.  May my world today be brightened by this prayer.  And may I realize that I am ;praying in line with Your wishes for me.  If I am not yet ready, help me to be patient.

I would see love today.  If this is the love brought by happy dreams, then let me be content.  But I would pray for the real world itself, the world beyond the dreams brought by the Holy Spirit.  May today be a blessed day in my life.  Thank You for listening to my prayer.

A Happy Outcome to All Things Is Sure

ACIM Workbook Lesson 292 – for Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Affirmation:  “A happy outcome to all things is sure.”

“We thank You, Father, for Your guarantee of only happy outcomes in the end.  Help us not interfere, and so delay the happy endings You have promised us for every problem that we can perceive; for every trial we think we still must meet.  (WB444)”

1 – The Solution Is Always with the Problem

One reassurance from A Course in Miracles that I return to when comforted with a problem is the statement that the solution is always with the problem.  And solutions do not wait; there is an answer coming, and it is quick to arrive.  When we find ourselves cornered, supposedly, by insoluble problems, we need only relax and ask what we need to do.  An answer will come into our minds shortly.  If not, then we are too emotional to hear the answer.  We need to relax, take our minds off the problem, and get involved in some kind of distraction.  Sometimes prayer helps, but if we are too worried, I have found that my mind will lose the prayer, and I will returning to worrying.  But after a very short while, a next step will appear apparent.  And then the next and the next steps.  We are only shown one step at a time.

2 – We Will Not Have to Wait Long for the Solution

The solution always comes.  Sometimes I find that over a day or two, one thought will occupy my mind in regard to the problem.  If it is a solution, I have come to believe that this is the action that I should next take.  Of course, I can misinterpret, and if the answer is not loving, I am listening to the fears of the ego.  We need to test out our interpretations, lest we mislead ourselves.

3 – Trials

We sometimes think that we have trials ahead, when in actuality we are making the difficulty by our own reactions.  This is especially true if one magically thinks that worry will protect against the thing about which one is worrying.  Forget not that this is magic, and ACIM warns repeatedly against magical thinking.  If we just keep in mind that no problem comes without a solution, right with it, then we will be alright.

Dear Father/Mother,

May I realize that when I am healed, when there are no trials in place, it is my mind that has been healed.  Suffering and pain are never truly of the body; they are of the mind and the choice of the mind.  We would not live this way.  Let us turn to You with our pain and suffering, and wait, only a brief time, to see our attitude change.  The attitude toward pain and suffering is what is amiss.

What of the pain that may be physical?  It is still the mind that must be healed.  We must open ourselves to You and Your healing, and accept that it is ourselves that have chosen the pain–for whatever insane reason.  May we adopt the love in our attitude that will assuage any and all suffering.  Thank You for helping me to do this, and to do this today.

This Is a Day of Stillness and Peace

ACIM Workbook Lesson 291 – for Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Affirmation:  “This is a day of stillness and of peace.”

“This day my mind is quiet, to receive the Thoughts You offer me.  And I accept what comes from You, instead of from myself.  I do not know the way to You.  But You are wholly certain.  Father, guide Your Son along the quiet path that leads to You.  Let my forgiveness be complete, and let the memory of You return to me.  (WB444)”

1 – To Forgive, Be Quiet and Still

This lesson indicates the primacy of forgiveness, if we are to find our way home.  And we need to be quiet if we are to find our way home; we need to still our minds.  Too much rushing about, and too much stress, will make emotional storms that will cause anger and attack to accompany us on our journey (an interpretation, not stated in ACIM).

2 – The Memory of God Returns

We learn that the “quiet path” leads to God (see above prayer).  And when our forgiveness is complete, the memory of God returns.

3 – Studying the Workbook

As with much of the information in the second part of the Workbook, these prayer capsule the lengthier explanations given in the Text.  We would not be ready to champion forgiveness unless we had studied the Text (in many cases, though this is an interpretation of ACIM).  Jesus says that we must make our own choice of which to read and study first, though he does also say that we must go through the Workbook if we are to call ourselves “teachers of God.”  (He does not specify how many times, beyond one, that we ought to go through the Workbook.  Many students/teachers of ACIM make the decision to go through the Workbook year after year.)

4 – The Memory of God Returns = Awakening

The return of the memory of God is another way of saying that we have awakened.  And God Himself makes the choice of when we are ready for this blessing.  Our forgiveness of all is a prerequisite, as this prayer makes certain.

Dear Father/Mother,

May I move ever closer today toward Awakening.  I do not ask with pride or with haste.  You are the One Who makes the decision.  In the meantime, I am content.  I know the end of the pathway is assured us all.  May we walk with patience the path that is set before us.

May I learn all that You would have been glean from the Workbook.  Thank You for including many summary parts of the Text.  Thank You for the reverence of the passages, for they inspire my day a great deal.  Be with my brothers and sisters as we seek to remember You.

My Present Happiness Is All I See

ACIM Workbook Lesson 290 – for Monday, October 17, 2011

Affirmation:  “My present happiness is all I see.”

“What I perceive without God’s Own Correction for the sight I made is frightening and painful to behold.  (WB442)”

1 – The Holy Spirit = God’s Own Correction

The Holy Spirit is God’s Own Correction.  He answered us (the solution is always with the problem, an ACIM tenet) at the moment that we forgot to laugh at our “tiny, mad idea” that we could separate from God.  The world that we see arose from this failure.  What we thought became capable of “real” effects, if only in what was actually illusion.

2 – The Holy Spirit = the Holy Comforter

Our world is indeed frightening when we do not invite the Holy Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to reinterpret what we are seeing.  We see pain and suffering, grief and disaster, and we fear that these tragedies will engulf us as well as our brothers and sisters, who are caught now in such unfortunate circumstances.  And these tragedies may touch us.  Will we lose our belief in guidance when they do?  Will we revert to an egoic view of a God who has abandoned us to ourselves, to our fate in an indifferent world?

3 – Our Way Is ACIM

We must not entertain such ideas.  They are so contrary to the tenets of our way, A Course in Miracles.  Our ideas are projected from within, and then our perception sees what we have projected.  If the internal is conflicted, the exterior will be as well.  If, on the other hand, we subscribe to ACIM tenets, we will make one decision, seeing that these things are not real.  We will recognize illusion for what it is.

4 – Let Us Help Our Brothers and Sisters

But we will not harden our hearts to our brothers and sisters in need.  We will rush to their aid, seeing their cries of distress as calls for help to which we are bound to respond.  We will offer the help that they are ready to accept, though we will not force our help upon anyone.  We will not share our ideas of salvation if they are not ready.  Jesus says that some are ready only for a smile (an ACIM statement).

Dear Father/Mother,

May I give to my brothers and sisters today what they need to have for salvation.  If they do not want to hear words of salvation from me, may I pray for them and bide my time for the day that they will be ready.  Heaven is always there for all of us.  When is what we decide.

May I feel the comfort that the Holy Spirit brings today.  When trials come my way, may I thank God for the strength to meet them, and may I realize that I have been given a choice to “choose again,” that this time I will get it right.  I pray that I will “get it right” today.

The Past is Over. It Can Touch Me Not.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 289 – for Sunday, October 16, 2011

Affirmation:  “The past is over.  It can touch me not.”

“Unless the past is over in my mind, the real world must escape my sight.  For I am really looking nowhere; seeing but what is not there.  How can I then perceive the world forgiveness offers?  This the past was made to hide, for this the world that can be looked on only now.  It has no past.  For what can be forgiven but the past, and if it is forgiven it is gone.  (WB442)”

1 – Living in the Now

This lesson supports the notion that we need to live in the Now, the present–with the past being dead to us.  This idea is almost universal in serious religious writing through the centuries.  But how many of us can, day-to-day or even moment-to-moment, live in the present?  We follow our complex minds into lives that focus, internally with our thought processes, on what has happened in the past that worried us, or what will happen in the future, a future that we fear.  This is still living the egoic model.

2 – Awakened Individuals Live in the Now

Awakened individuals tend to live in the present, according to published reports.  One of the most accessible is the spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now; A New Earth), who reports in an interview (the CD is entitled, “Even the Sun Will Die”) that he does not think much of the future–meaning that he plans only when he has physical needs to consider, such as planning for an upcoming trip, with reservations to make and the like.

3 – Let Us Not Dip into Fear

We would do well to practice living in the Now as often as we can.  If we dwell on our the past and the future, we will almost without exception let our minds dip into fear.  We will not believe that the Holy Spirit will guide us, or that He has guided us in the past.  But A Course in Miracles says that we cannot but be in the right place at the right time.  There are no accidents in salvation (from the Manual).  We can practice best when our minds are in an attitude of complete forgiveness.  Then we will be entertaining the means that ACIM is giving us to prepare us for the ultimate revelation, the sustained revelation, of Awakening.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would live in the present, the Now, though my memories play in my mind back to the past.  Let those past thoughts not hinder my living today.  May I lose the disturbing things that happened by failing to dwell upon them.  May I take the good from the past only insofar as it helps me to live better in the Now.

I would not be fearful anymore.  Fear has been a problem for me, most often manifested in anxiety.  May those days be behind me forever.  May Your peace fill my mind and heart and spirit.

My Goal Is God, and My Brother Brings Me to Him

ACIM Workbook Lesson 288 – for Saturday, October 15, 2011

Affirmation:  “Let me forget my brother’s past today.”

“This is the thought that leads the way to You, and brings me to my goal.  I cannot come to You without my brother.  And to know my Source, I first must recognize what You created one with me.  My brother’s is the hand that leads me on the way to You.  His sins are in the past along with mine, and I am saved because the past is gone.  Let me not cherish it within my heart, or I will lose the way to walk to You.  My brother is my savior.  Let me not attack the savior You have given me.  But let me honor him who bears Your Name, and so remember that It is my own.

“Forgive me, then, today.  And you will know you have forgiven me if you behold your brother in the light of holiness.  He cannot be less holy than can I, and you can not be holier than he.  (WB441)”

1 – Special Relationships / Holy Relationships

This lesson reflects one of the most central tenets of A Course in Miracles:  We find our way home through the special-relationship-turned holy that we have with our brother (or sister), and we find the way by forgiveness of that individual.  This interpretation assumes the love that we have for our brother and sister is genuine and, as much as the Holy Spirit can guide us, free of the egoic notions that have made our relationships “special.”

2 – We Are One with Our Brother/Sister

We are one with that brother and sister.  This can be extended to all brothers and sisters in this world and beyond (an interpretation, not stated in ACIM).  We have the gifts that we offer to our holy brothers and sisters.  There is no difference.  And if we failed to offer forgiveness of the illusions in which we (and they) find ourselves, we will not know salvation, salvation in the sense that ACIM means it.

3 – We Make This Journey with Our Brother/Sister

We must make this journey with our brother and sister.  ACIM has a well-known passage in which Jesus asks us if we can make progress if we take a step forward, ahead of our brother, and then, when he catches up, take a step backward.  Can there be any progress in such a scenario?  We must walk hand-in-hand, and then we will not only know peace in this world, but we will be walking together on a happy road to Awakening.

Dear Father/Mother,

Guide me today as I see my brothers and sisters.  Keep me aware that we are one, and that unless I walk with them to You, I cannot walk to You.  You are my goal, and I would choose to find You in the company of all those who surround me.

May today be a blessed day, knowing that we are all in this together.  Help me to enjoy the company of the significant people in my life.  May there be no conflict, no attack, no anger.  Help us to feel the love that is Yours to give.  Help me to love You  in the midst of the time that I spend with my companions in this world.

Thank You for giving me another good day.  May the day that is ahead be just as fruitful in the awareness of Your felt Presence.  Thank You for not hiding from me.  Thank You for being there when I pray.  Help me to pray in Your will, which is mine as well.

Does God Know about Us?

ACIM Workbook Lesson 287 – for Friday, October 14, 2011

Affirmation:  “You are my goal, my Father.  Only You.”

“Where would I go but Heaven?  What could be a substitute for happiness?  What gift could I prefer before the peace of God?  What treasure would I seek and find and keep that can compare with my Identity?  And would I rather live with fear than love?

“You are my goal, my Father.  What but You could I desire to have?  What way but that which leads to You could I desire to walk?  And what except the memory of You could signify to me the end of dreams and futile substitutions for the truth?  You are my only goal.  Your Son would be as You created him.  What way but this could I expect to recognize my Self, and be at one with my identity?  (WB441)”

1 – Our Relationships to Our Higher Power

All of these lessons are meant to solidify our relationship with our Higher Power.  For me this is God, though there are some students/teachers of A Course in Miracles who believe that God does not know about us, that we made this world, and that His channels of communication are closed (which He does recognize).  In this understanding, God thinks that His children sleep and must be awakened.  And He is lonely without our communication with Him.

2 – Does God Know about Us?

I do not personally subscribe to this interpretation.  I wonder why the Workbook is filled with lessons that discuss God and prayers that are addressed to Him, if God is oblivious to us?  In addition, and importantly, a remote God is not part of my personal experience of Him.  I pray, and I receive answers to my prayers.  Often, what comes is an experience of the peace that passeth understanding (from the Bible), and this peace reminds me of the peace and strength that surely passed into Jesus during his earthly mission.  He retreated often for prayer, often in the night.  He prayed in Gethsemane, while his disciples slept.  ACIM says, of course, that Jesus did not hold their sleeping against them, He knew that he could not be abandoned.  And why not?  Is not this biblical testimony to a God who listens and responds to prayer?

3 – The Presence of the Holy Spirit

If you do read those passages alluded to above, and you feel that the Holy Spirit is the Universal Communication, the One who answers prayer, then all is well with you.  Neither you nor I are depending on self alone, which would only mean that the ego is in ascendancy.  We would turn to the greatest understanding that we have of the Higher Power to which we have access, and let that Higher Power guide us through our days.  I turn to the Holy Spirit for guidance also.  But I see Him as an instrument of our salvation, created by God for us as soon as we, the Sons and Daughters of God, had “forgotten to laugh at the tiny, mad idea.”

Dear Father/Mother,

Thank You for answering my prayers.  Thank You for being there for me.  Even in the past, when I went through dark nights of the soul, I knew that You were there, perhaps hiding from me for reasons that I did not fully understand, and still don’t.  But I trust You.  I trust you implicitly.  And I thank You that now I am feeling Your presence when I pray; I am not going through a dark night of the soul.

Be with all of us who reach for You.  If we find solace in knowing that the Holy Spirit is Your Communicator, let us be glad for one another.  We know that we are not alone.  And that is enough.

The Hush of Heaven Holds My Heart Today

ACIM Workbook Lesson 286 – for Thursday, October 13, 2011

Affirmation:  “The hush of Heaven holds my heart today.”

“Father, how still today!  How quietly do all things fall in place!  This is the day that has been chosen as the time  in which I come to understand the lesson that there is no need that I do anything.  In You is every choice already made.  In You has every conflict been resolved.  In You is everything I hope to find already given me.  Your peace is mine.  My heart is quiet, and my mind at rest.  Your Love is Heaven, and Your Love is mine.  (WB440)”

1 – I Need Do Nothing

“I need do nothing”:  This is what the Text says that we will recognize in an instant when we have reached home.  This is the one happy revelation.  Now the Workbook brings us to that point.  May we be ready.  Note that this prayer (above) says, “there is no need that I do anything.”

2 – We Do Not Need to “Merit” Salvation

May our hearts be quiet today.  We have sought and sought, and worked so hard, to merit our salvation.  We do not have to do such work, though we do need to relinquish our investment in the ego.  Any remnants of the ego (and there are many for most of us) will delay our Awakening.  We need to drop this part of our belief about ourselves.  It is not difficult to let it go, once the motivation is there.  And for those of us who have come this far in the Workbook, it is very, very likely that the motivation is there.

3 – Perfectly “Calm and Quiet”

Let us be “perfectly calm and quiet” today.  That is the blessing that we will ultimately come to appreciate, though addiction to the adrenalin rush is strong, and we may, for a long time perhaps, seek to retain drama in our lives.  It is not really so.  We do not want or need drama, and the more often we turn to God for communion, the more we will change to want this calm and quiet that Jesus holds out to us as the ultimate.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would be quiet today, assimilating the thoughts that You have given me in this lesson.  May I learn that to be perfectly calm and quiet is to live in Your love, peaceful in Your peace.  May I not seek drama, because this is only a diversion that will take me away from You.

Help me to know the truth of Your statements.  Thank You for reassuring me when I am disheartened, for holding me up when I feel down.  Your way is best.  I have always known this, and I would put into practice finding Your way throughout my pathway today.

Thank You for always being there when I call out.

My Holiness Shines Bright and Clear Today

ACIM Workbook Lesson 285 – for Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Affirmation:  “My holiness shines bright and clear today.”

“And I will ask for only joyous things the instant I accept my holiness.  For what would be the use of pain to me, what purpose would my suffering fulfill, and how would grief and loss avail me if insanity departs from me today, and I accept my holiness instead?

“Father, my holiness is Yours.  Let me rejoice in it, and through forgiveness be restored to sanity.  Your Son is still as You created him.  My holiness is part of me, and also part of You.  And what can alter Holiness Itself?  (WB440)”

1 – ACIM in a Nutshell

This lesson explains the reason that we can let suffering in all its manifestations go.  We have been insane, mad.  We can let this go, if we follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we experience the real world, and we let God come to us in Awakening.  This, in a nutshell, is the route as described by A Course in Miracles.

2 – From Personal Self to the Holy Self

May we learn to think of our Selves as holy.  This is not the little self (called the “personal self” or the “separated self” by A Course of Love), but the glorious culmination of all that we truly are–the Self that is the elevated Self of form in Christ-consciousness (from ACOL), and called Awakening in ACIM.  Perhaps the time will come when we have learned enough.  Habits die hard, and we have all been on a search for God (actually) for a very, very long time.  As individuals who believed in the separation from God, there was little, once we embarked on the way to spirituality, for us to do but search.
3 – Learning Will End

A Course of Love (channeled by Mari Perron) says that there is a time when learning is to end.  We are approaching that time in these final lessons from ACIM from the Workbook.  We are in a meditative state as we seek God in our devotionals.  We have had our questions answered, but we may not fully realize this.  That is why we return again and again to ACIM.  That is not a bad way to spend our time, of course.  We need, before learning ceases, to over-learn the tenets that ACIM would promulgate.  We have spent eons over-learning the dictates of the ego.  It may take some time for us to over-learn what Jesus would have us study now.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would move ever closer, today, to assimilating the tenets of A Course in Miracles.  I would learn and over-learn what I have spent eons trying to ignore.  I would end those eons immediately.

Be with me as I invite Awakening.  I know that this is Your decision, and I would not be impatient or try to hurry You.  Take me when You are ready.  Help me to follow Your instructions so that I am doing all that You would have me do to be ready.

I Can Elect to Change All Thoughts that Hurt

ACIM Workbook Lesson 284 – for Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Affirmation:  “I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt.”

“Loss is not loss when properly perceived.  Pain is impossible.  There is no grief with any cause at all.  And suffering of any kind is nothing but a dream.

“Father, what You have given cannot hurt, so grief and pain must be impossible.  Let me not fail to trust in You today, accepting but the joyous as Your gifts; accepting but the joyous as the truth.  (WB439)”

1 – Attend to This Message

Today’s lesson is a reiteration of earlier writing.  We need to attend to this message and attend to it carefully.  We may not believe it fully, so lost in the illusion are we.

2 – Loss, Pain, Grief, Suffering = Dreams, Illusions

This lesson says clearly that loss, pain, grief, and suffering are dreams, illusions.  They are not real.  It is true that all of us feel these emotions, and sometimes their physical manifestations, but I think that this passage is letting us know that we are mistaken in believing that such feelings and physical manifestations have to determine our destiny.  We need only look to the religious dimensions of poverty-stricken peoples to realize that many of these individuals have a faith that has lifted them above the suffering.  Not all of us have this kind of faith, but we can always ask for a strengthening of faith in the face of obstacles and disappointments, loss, pain, grief, suffering, to know that God is real and that He is always here for us.

3 – What Are Some Practical Ways to Change What Hurts?

The best thing that we can say is that we are still living in insanity, in an insane world.  The comments that other people make may seem humorous to them, but they may sting us.  We need to let go of this judgment, for judgment it is.  And we will not know Awakening as long as we judge.  Indeed, we are told that when we cease to judge, we are made ready for Awakening.  Prayer helps, prayer that is a very practical way of turning aside from the insanity in which we find ourselves.  Communing with our God is the very best way to change what hurts.  He will lead us down a better pathway.  And then we will be well on our way to joyously redeeming the day that we are about to rue.  When we know in our hearts that judgment is keeping us from the joy of Awakening, we will turn aside from these negative thoughts and focus on the all-powerful messages of ACIM.

4 – The Uncompromising Truth of A Course in Miracles

This lesson is the uncompromising truth of ACIM.  Not all of us are ready to accept the message of this passage, but to the extent that we do, even in hardship we can experience the peace of God and Heaven on earth.

Dear Father/Mother,

If I am tempted today to think that I am actually in pain or am suffering, may I realize that I am making the illusion too real.  In this world, we experience many bad things, but with Your help, we can overcome.  We do not have to turn negative experiences into anything that even remotely resembles true reality.  We are living in a dream world.

May I experience in my dream today only happiness.  This is what the Holy Spirit brings to me, when I am ready and open to receive His blessings.  May I be open today.  May I not turn a twinge of pain, of whatever degree, into a question about Your love.  You are all Love, and may I never forget this.

Be with me as I plan to live a day free of suffering.  I do not have to turn any negative aspect of life in this dream into something to make my day go badly.  Let me rejoice in the knowledge that You are always there, carrying me when the despair gets bad.

My True Identity Abides in You

ACIM Workbook Lesson 283 – for Monday, October 10, 2011

Affirmation:  “My true Identity abides in You.”

“Father, I made an image of myself, and it is this I call the Son of God.  Yet is creation as it always was, for Your creation is unchangeable.  Let me not worship idols.  I am he my Father loves.  My holiness remains the light of Heaven and the Love of God.  Is not what is beloved of You secure?  Is not the light of Heaven infinite?  Is not Your Son my true Identity, when You created everything that is?  (WB439)”

1 – We Make Personas

We all, in our egoic state, make personas, and then we live out what we are trying to present to the world.  This is an egoic image, and images cannot talk.  We find that others see through our personas, straight to our hearts, though they do not frequently see the love that actually resides there.  They think, sometimes, that they are seeing something that deserves rejection.  But nothing deserve rejection.  If we are prone to attack or anger, we are actually making calls for help, an an ACIM student/teacher, in his/her better moments, will recognize this.  We are acting at such time out of an ego that needs to wither away.

2 – We Are the Light of Heaven

We are the light of Heaven, though we do not often believe this.  It is not arrogance to so believe, because we are talking about the Self that is Christ, the Self as God created us.  But it is up to us to save the world, though not through overbearing means.  Not everybody is ready for our message, and many will actively discount it, believing that what we say is of the “devil.”  But there is no devil; there is only an ego that projects a devil.  This is part of the theology of ACIM.

3 – Hell Is Guilt

Even hell is not real, according to ACIM.  Hell is guilt that we experience right here on earth.  Of course, we can make images that appear to be hell, but that does not make them real.  Jesus asks if the number of pitchforks a devil carries make us believe in him/her more readily (a paraphrase from ACIM)?  Certainly not.  We either believe or not, but the extent of the delusion matters not.

Dear Father/Mother,

May I live today the real person that I am, the Self that You created.  May I not remain mired in an image of myself that is not true.  May I not wear a mask before the world.  Let me show my real Self, the Daughter of You, as You would have me do.

May today be good in all respects.  May I remain patient in trials, if they come, and may I realize that trials are but a chance to make a new choice, a better choice than something that I once chose before.  Be with me as I seek to live the Self whom You would have me be.

I Will Not Be Afraid of Love Today

ACIM Workbook Lesson 282 – for Sunday, October 9, 2011

Affirmation:  “I will not be afraid of love today.”

“Father, Your Name is Love and so is mine.  Such is the truth.  And can the truth be changed by merely giving it another name?  The name of fear is simply a mistake.  Let me not be afraid of truth today.  (WB438)”

1 – No Fear / Only Love

May we fear nothing today.  And may we not be afraid of love.

2 – A Dance

It is so often that, in our special relationships turned holy, we do a dance.  When intimacy comes too close, we move away by way of an attack or simply an episode of anger.  Then when distance has been established again, we are ready to move to intimacy.

3 – Our Closest, Holiest Relationships

Such is foolishness.  Let us ask God for help.  We crave the intimacy in our closest relationships, and it is only a holdover from egoic days that we fear this intimacy, this greater love.  There is nothing to fear in love.  There is only fear itself to fear in fear (a paraphrase from Franklin Delano Roosevelt).  We would be wiser today to spend a few moments in quiet, asking God how we might never be afraid of love, and never pick a fight as a way of allowing our fragile egos to reassert themselves.

4 – Reaching for the Truth

We would know truth.  Contrary to what we often think, everyone’s truth is not always different (an interpretation, not stated in ACIM).  We do have differing personalities, and differing cultures, and so truth does become altered by the genes and the environment that we bring to it.  But let us ask for truth as A Course in Miracles defines it.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would not do a dance today, fearing intimacy with those closest to me.  I would rejoice in the holy relationships that I do have, and I would not fear the lack of boundaries between us.  Help me to encourage closeness, not to be afraid of it.

Thank You for encouraging my special relationships to evolve into holy ones.  May my joy today be full in the midst of my holy relationships.

May You help me today never to be afraid of intimacy, never to turn to anger and attack out of fear of closeness.

Solace when I Am Hurting

ACIM Workbook Lesson 281 – for Saturday, October 8, 2011

Affirmation:  “I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts.”

“Father, Your Son is perfect.  When I think that I am hurt in any way, it is because I have forgotten who I am, and that I am as You created me.  Your Thoughts can only bring me happiness.  If ever I am sad or hurt or ill, I have forgotten what You think, and put my little meaningless ideas in place of where Your Thoughts belong, and where they are.  I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts.  The Thoughts I think with You can only bless.  The Thoughts I think with You alone are true.  (WB438)”

1 – When I Am Sad, Hurt, Ill

“If ever I am sad or hurt or ill” is a sweeping statement, and it continues to let us know that we have forgotten Who we are, in the Self that is the Christ.  Our little selves do feel sad or get hurt or become ill, but these little selves are the true us.  We are bigger than we think.  We are one with God in our Selves, and even in our little selves, when we turn inward in silence, we can commune with the God Who is within.

2 – It Is Our Thinking that Is Wrong

It is our thinking that is wrong, according to this passage.  When we think Thoughts with God, we do not suffer.  We can ask that this faulty thinking be remedied.

3 – May Pain Not Turn to Suffering

Of course, in this world it would be unwise to discount the many bad things that happen, the many people who are suffering, even unto death.  We must be compassionate, and we must do all that we individually can do to remedy the ills of our fellow men and women.  But in the larger sense, according to ACIM, these difficulties are illusory, and our brothers and sisters, in their real Selves, have not been hurt.  This does not mean that we downplay what they (or we) are feeling now.  This is very true to their (or our) experience.  But we do need to be cognizant of the larger picture as presented by ACIM.  This larger picture will help us to endure the pain, but not to enlarge the pain into suffering.  It is a “mind” thing–mind over matter.  We will not always succeed, because we are fallible, but we can succeed far more often than we normally give ourselves credit for.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would not forget that it is my own thinking that is awry when I am hurting, when I am ill, sad, dejected.  Of course, in this world I may feel pain, but help me to understand how to handle this pain so that it does not turn into suffering.  Help me to rise above pain in all its forms.  Jesus said that we do not have to learn through pain.  And I know also that he said that the solution is always found with the problem.  Help me to learn through rewards, which is the lasting way for me to learn.

I sometimes hurt when I have forgotten that I am Your Daughter.  Help me to abide in Your love, to feel ever more confident that I can overcome any limitations that seem to afflict me.  Jesus overcame the world, and in A Course in Miracles, promises us that we do not have to have limitations because of what he has done.  Thank you for this generous and blessed elder brother to me.

Be with all the world today, with my brothers and sisters who are hurting.  May we find Your blessings in the midst of pain, and may we find comfort in knowing that You are always near, deep within, ready to provide solace.

Thank You.

I Am Free, Limitless, and Loving–as God Wills

ACIM Workbook Lesson 280 – for Friday, October 7, 2011

Affirmation:  “What limits can I lay upon God’s Son?”

“No thought of God but is forever pure.  Can I lay limits on the Son of God, whose Father willed that he be limitless, and like Himself in freedom and in love?

“Today let me give honor to Your Son, for thus alone I find the way to You.  Father, I lay no limits on the Son You love and You created limitless.  The honor that I give to him is Yours, and what is Yours belongs to me as well.  (WB436)”

1 – Limitless Release and Pure Joy

One of my favorite passages in A Course in Miracles says that we are to go throughout the day thinking of and experiencing “limitless release” and “pure joy.”  The release is limitless because all things are freed with it.  The lesson for today encourages this same idea of limitlessness.  We are truly free, though as long as we listen to the ego, we have an imprisoned will.  And this imprisoned will ultimately becomes intolerable for us, and we recognize that there must be a better way.  Bad things happen to us with an imprisoned will, because we experience pain, and while, the threshold for pain may be high, it is not unlimited.  God set the limits on our possibility to miscreate, and sooner or later all of us will return, though the return may take millions of years.  It is up to us to shorten that time, and each of us, it is said, saves a thousand years.  (These are paraphrases from ACIM.)

2 – We Would Not Have an Imprisoned Will

We would be free today, without an imprisoned will.  This means that we have recognized that God’s will and our own are actually identical, and, when we listen to the Holy Spirit, He is communicating to us what we really want.  We are not puppets, dangled by an indifferent god.  But we have failed to communicate with God, and He finds that His channels are closed.  We are asleep and need to be awakened.  God will effect this in us.  The ending, as said repeatedly in this blog, is sure.

3 – Creators of the Real World

We have the gifts of God.  He has nothing that He will not share with us.  We are meant to be creators of the real world, not makers of the illusory world.  Let us today walk into the sunshine with God, being led by the hand of Jesus.

Dear Father/Mother,

Thank You for the moments of limitless release and pure joy which I have felt earlier today.  May the remainder of the day and tomorrow be filled with such moments as well.  I would not have an imprisoned will because of the ego’s dictates.  I would recognize that Your Will for me and my own will are actually identical, when I am sane and in my right mind.  Take all madness from my deluded mind today.

I ask to be made ready to be a creator in the real world.  I would not make illusions anymore.  I have only found flights of egoistic happiness, happiness that ended in tears.  Because I know that illusions bring tears, I know that illusions are not Your Will.  Guide me into the happy dreams the Holy Spirit brings, and then on into Awakening.  Thank You for Your patience with me, for sometimes I am way too stubborn for my own good.  Make me flexible enough to follow the guidance of Your Universal Inspiration consistently.

Feeling Abandoned

ACIM Workbook Lesson 279 – for Thursday, October 6, 2011

Affirmation:  “Creation’s freedom promises my own.”

“The end of dreams is promised me, because God’s Son is not abandoned by His Love.  Only in dreams is there a time when he appears to be in prison, and awaits a future freedom, if it be at all.  Yet in reality his dreams are gone, with truth established in their place.  And now is freedom his already.

“I will accept Your promises today, and give my faith to them.  My Father loves the Son Whom He created as His Own.  Would You withhold the gifts You gave to me?  (WB436)”

1 – We Are in the Eternal

In the present our dreams are gone.  This is the eternal present, the eternal Now (an interpretation, not stated in ACIM).  We will get past even the “happy dreams the Holy Spirit gives” (a quotation from the Workbook), and know the real world that God will grant us to see when we are ready.  Only He knows the place and the hour.  But we can pray that our experience of the real world comes soon.

2 – See the World with Vision

In reality, our dreams are gone.  The world will look different because we will see with vision, with new eyes.  We know that this blessing is on the way when we have seen little edges of light around familiar objects.  Real vision is coming.  It may take a long time, but time itself is an illusion, and so this truly does not matter.  The end is sure, now that we have started of the pathway.  (These are paraphrases from ACIM.)

3 – The Gift of the Real World

The gift of the real world would not be withheld by God.  The prayer for today counsels this.  May we wait in expectation, not beset by preoccupations that only scatter our consciousness.  May we wait for God to act, and may we know that He would choose for us to listen to the Holy Spirit and let Him act in us, to bring about our readiness.  We do not have to do a lot, only a “little willingness” (a Text quotation) is required.  The Holy Spirit accomplishes the vast majority of the change that we wish to see in ourselves.

Dear Father/Mother,

I long to see the real world on a sustainable basis.  May my dreams of this illusory world stay happy, and edge into reality.  I long for the vision that only You can give.  May my eyes see with real vision today.

Be with me as I do the small part that the Holy Spirit requires of me.  I know that His part is much larger than mine, and that this is a blessing.  I would only choose amiss, without His guidance.  Be with me today as I seek to follow Your Voice, Your Universal Inspiration, throughout any temptations of the day.

How to Cure Madness and Fear

ACIM Workbook Lesson 278 – for Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Affirmation:  “If I am bound, my Father is not free.”

“Father, I ask for nothing but the truth.  I have had many foolish thoughts about myself and my creation, and have brought a dream of fear into my mind.  Today, I would not dream.  I choose the way to You instead of madness and instead of fear.  For truth is safe, and only love is sure.  (WB435)”

1 – Choose Reality

If we would not dream, we must choose the real world; we must choose God’s reality.  We are caught in dreams, still, most of the time.  Most of us do have glimpses of Awakening, glimpses of the real world that precedes Awakening.  The dreams that the Holy Spirit brings are meant to calm our frantic minds so that we welcome Awakening and are not fearful of the experience.  Jesus tells us that if a light is turned on while we are asleep, we will initially be afraid be afraid of this light, thinking it is part of our dream (or our nightmare).  But once we awaken, we realize that we are no longer dreaming and that we have returned to the world.  So we are no longer afraid of the light.  (These are paraphrases from ACIM.)

2 – Dream Not of Fear

We would not dream of fear today.  We would not dream at all, but pray to awaken.  We would not be insane any longer, for that is exactly what we have been in this disturbed world.  We have been mad, just as surely, though less obviously, than the unfortunate individuals who are committed for mental illness.  Our mental health is precarious also.  We need to know that just because we are walking freely into the world and not behind locked asylum doors, we are not necessarily sane.  Most of us are not sane.  May we come to understand the Voice that speaks to us of the reality of God in which we can walk away from madness.

3 – Take Steps to a Sane Reality

If we love, we are taking steps to a sane reality.  By love, we do not mean special love relationships, unless these special love relationships are well on their way to being holy relationships.  Our way home is through the love that we bear for our brother (and sister), and this is the way in which we practice forgiveness.  It is the way of A Course in Miracles.  When we are together with our brother (or sister), we are forgiving, kind, generous, and in so being, we are learning God’s way.  We do not need to contemplate (or meditate) for extremely long periods.  This is a way meant for others, and ACIM is meant for us.  Let us follow the way of ACIM today, and let us start by totally forgiving our brother (or sister), knowing that to do so is the way home for us.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would follow God’s Voice today.  I would do so knowing that I wish not to be misled into believing that my illusions, fueled by the ego, are masquerading as God’s Voice.  Be with me to ensure that I make this distinction between delusion and sanity.

May I walk into the real world as quickly as my steps can take me there.  You have prepared me, and it is up to me to follow Your Way with joy.  When I am truly joyous and at peace, then I am less likely to listen to the ego and to be misled back into insanity.  Be with me today as I seek only what You bid me to find.

The Law of Love

ACIM Workbook Lesson 277 – for Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Affirmation:  “Let me not bind Your Son with laws I made.”

“Your Son is free, my Father.  Let me not imagine I have bound him with the laws I made to rule the body.  He is not subject to any laws I made by which I try to make the body more secure.  He is not changed by what is changeable.  He is not slave to any laws of time.  He is as You created him, because he knows no law except the law of love.  (WB435)”

1 – Are Pills OK?

We often do things for our bodies that are meant to make them more secure, safer.  This is all unnecessary.  We need be careful for nothing.  Yet even Jesus recognized our frailty when he counseled the use of pills to help us, because if we do not use them, we will be even more in a fear-weakened state (Text tenets).  Though pills are a form of magical solution, they are not banned by Jesus.  The Course is always practical (an ACIM tenet).

2 – Travel More Lightly

But if we would know freedom, we must travel more lightly.  There is a well-known poem that beings, “When I am old, I will wear purple,” and it celebrates the freedom of the older individual who is not so bound by the conventions of this world, the ways that we have developed to protect our human condition.  This older woman would travel more lightly if she were going through the world again.  I speculate that Jesus, who did not even have a place to lay his head at night, would counsel us also to travel more lightly.  We do not need elaborate locks to protect us (a paraphrase from the Text).  Why are we so defensive?  ACIM says that defense creates what it would protect from (a paraphrase).  We do not need defense, nor do we need to be defensive by retaliating when attacked by a brother or sister.  We need to walk God’s way, sure in the knowledge that He walks with us.  And His defense of us is all that we need.

3 – How Can I See Turmoil Go Away?

If we live the law of love, much of this turmoil in which we find ourselves will dissipate.  We make much of the trouble that we encounter.  As has often been said, we are our own worse enemies.  May we turn aside from such manner of living immediately.  Let us live the ACIM way, the way of love and forgiveness.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would travel more lightly today.  If I think I need a pill for some reason, I will stop and ask if this is really necessary.  The Holy Spirit will answer, knowing that sometimes a magical solution will diminish fear.

I would walk this world lightly, knowing that it is not my real home.  I will recognize others who believe as I do, but I will not let the ego intrude on this mystery of soul recognition.  I am not better than anyone else; we are all equals, all destined to find our way home.  May I be drawn today to those who could benefit from my company.

I would leave turmoil behind today.  Conflict is always of the ego, because God’s peace is always quiet.  May I live as stress-free a day as is possible under my circumstances, and may I not forget to thank You for the benefits of stress-free living.  Be with me if today does bring stress that I cannot ignore.

What Is the Word of God?

ACIM Workbook Lesson 276 – for Monday, October 3, 2011

Affirmation:  “The Word of God is given me to speak.”

“What is the Word of God?  ‘My Son is pure and holy as Myself.’  And thus did God become the Father of the Son He loves, for thus was he created.

“Father, Your Word is mine.  And it is this that I would speak to all my brothers, who are given me to cherish as my own, as I am loved and blessed and saved by You.  (WB434)”

1 – We Are Still as God Created Us

“Pure” and “holy” are different ways of saying that we are all actually innocent of wrongdoing.  We are still as God created us (from the Workbook).  We have made mistakes, but we live in an illusory world, and these mistakes and this world are not reality.  Of course, we do see effects of our mistakes in this illusion, and we will act to undo wrongs that we may have perpetrated, if this is now possible.  We see, in our egoic minds, the result of mistakes made “real” in illusion, but nevertheless felt by flesh-and-blood creatures that we are.

2 – We Choose Our Reality

Our suffering is felt by us and felt by those who love us.  Even though we are told in A Course in Miracles that nothing happens that we have not chosen, we do have difficulty with this concept.  If we see this message truly, we will not blame the victim, although much New Age thinking does.  We will see that the Self that chose this pain did so for a reason, and that God’s best answer to us is to guide us away from the pain.  He would not have us learn through pain, which is quite unnecessary (a Text tenet).  We learn best through rewards, which are lasting in their effect (unlike pain, which is temporary at best, a Text tenet).  We are living in illusion, and so the Self that chose the pain knows that the illusion is just that–and not real.  But we are little selves that do not see the broader picture, and so we question and bemoan our fate.  It should not be thus.

3 – Guide Our Thinking to a Better Life

We can create a better life for ourselves by changing the manner of our thinking.  ACIM counsels this, and a close study of Jesus’s words will change one’s life for the better.  The more our minds are filled with Course-centered thinking, the better our lives will become.  We lose those “happy dreams the Holy Spirit brings” only when we attack, drop into judgment, or plan unnecessarily against contingencies to come.  (If there are plans to be made, the Holy Spirit will tell us of these–an ACIM tenet.)

4 – Our Real Selves Are Holy

So, today, let us see ourselves, our real Selves as pure and holy.  In no way are we to attach ego to this perception, because, if we do, we fall on our face again.  Let us know that innocence is real because illusion is not real.  And it is the real world that we would choose for our living today.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would listen to Your Word and not the egoic voice that I made in a foolish, but tragic desire to be separate from You.  I would not end the separation on Your timetable, but I ask that Your Voice guide me all through the day, so that I fulfill Your requirements for salvation.  Help me to be patient and kind always, the epitome of loving.  May I not hold anything that is amiss against my holy brothers and sisters, Your children.

Be with me throughout this day, something that I ask of You repeatedly.  Your Voice will guide me when I am flexible enough to listen.  Help me to be pliable today.

I Need Be Anxious over Nothing

ACIM Workbook Lesson 275 – for Sunday, October 2, 2011

Affirmation:  “God’s healing Voice protects all things today.”

“Your healing Voice protects all things today, and so I leave all things to You.  I need be anxious over nothing.  For Your Voice will tell me what to do and where to go; to whom to speak and what to say to him, what thoughts to think, what words to give the world.  The safety that I bring is given me.  Father, Your Voice protects all things through me.  (WB434)”

1 – Follow the Holy Spirit Consistently

The “Voice” is the Holy Spirit, the Universal Inspiration (a Text tenet).  We are, once again, bade to leave our minds to the Voice, and to follow His bidding.  We are not to take matters into our own hands.  If we get quiet and commune, pray, silently, to God, we will almost immediately get a sense of what to do or say in the next encounter–perhaps an encounter that we have been dreading.  We will feel an inner sense of assurance that we are not alone, that the encounter will go well because we have asked for help.  Let us not forget to ask for help all along the way today.

2 – Guide My Interactions with Others

We are even helped by what thoughts to think, for how would we know what to say to our brothers and sisters if we were not guided, ahead of time, by our thoughts about upcoming conversations?  And the guidance comes during the conversation as well.  We are never left to deal with any matter on our own.

3 – May My Ego-Consumed Will Not Interfere with God’s Will

Of course, our own will can intervene, and then we are likely to become quite stubborn, and forget that we never see the whole picture.  The Holy Spirit, the Voice, does see the whole pictures, and so His judgments about what to do or say, not to mention what to think, are true (a Manual tenet).  He knows what has happened in the past, is happening now, and will happen in the future; we do not have such prescience.  And so His judgments guide rightly.  (All of these paraphrases are from the Manual.)

4 – Safety Can Be Found

We will know safety, and so we not all want this in our very troubled world?  In this time of what seem to be escalating difficulties on earth, we need to know that we will be cared for.  We need very practical things by way of sustenance and shelter for our families.  Even if we fail to find these things, we have not been left, abandoned.  Some of the most spiritual people in our history have had very few material possessions.  Jesus himself was quite poor and dependent on the generosity of those who listened to his message.  But he did not worry.  He knew that, regardless of what happened, even unto the cross, he was cared for by the Father.

Dear Father/Mother,

I would follow the example of Jesus today, and be anxious over nothing.  I sometimes think that anxiety is my particular cross to bear in this life.  If I could finally let the anticipation of what others think leave me, then I think that the fear elicited by the ego would lose its punching power.  May I leave anxiety behind as I leave fear behind.  May I not care so much for anybody else thinks.  I need only follow guidance to leave both anxiety–my form of fear–as well as fear itself out in the cold.

Be with me today as I seek to please only You.  And You are in my corner, regardless of what mistakes I may make.  I would correct those mistakes as soon as they occur, and then I would walk more confidently along the path that You have set before me.

Today Belongs to Love / Let Me Not Fear

ACIM Workbook Lesson 274 – for Saturday, October 1, 2011

Affirmation:  “Today belongs to Love.  Let me not fear.”

“Father, today I would let all things be as You created them, and give Your Son the honor due his sinlessness; the love of brother to his brother and his Friend.  Through this I am redeemed.  Through this as well the truth will enter where illusions were, light will replace all darkness, and Your Son will know he is as You created him.

“A special blessing comes to us today, from Him Who is our Father.  Give this day to Him, and there will be no fear today, because the day is given unto Love.  (WB433)”

1 – The Terminology of Today’s Prayer

The capitalization in this prayer needs some explanation.  “You,” meaning God, is capitalized.  “Your Son,” meaning the larger Self of which we are a part, the Christ Self, is capitalized.  And “Friend,” meaning the Self of our brother, is capitalized.

2 – The Christ Self

This capitalization reminds us that the Self of which we are a part, the Christ Self, is the redeemed, the Awakened Self that we may not yet have accomplished on earth.  But the promise is there waiting for us.  And the promise is also there waiting for our brothers and sisters, our Friends.

3 – Leaving the Ego Behind

The lesson for today also stresses that when we are living, as best we can, the Self that is our potential, we will not know fear.  Fear is often stated in A Course in Miracles as the product of the ego.  It is of the egoic mind, and the extent to which we do not listen to its dictates is the extent to which we speed along home to God.  There is no reason to fear, but we do not recognize this when we have not disengaged from the ego.  Once we have Awakened, we will not know fear.  We will be so sustained by love that we will walk this world with blessings on our lips for ourselves and our brothers and sisters.  Nothing will be as it is now.  We will see with the vision of Christ.

Dear Father/Mother,

Help me to be patient.  Very few of us have awakened yet, and sometimes we wonder about what the process means.  Help me to wait on Your timing.  It is all up to You.  When the ego is completely gone from my inclinations, and when I have fully forgiven myself as well as all my brothers and sisters, thank You that the way is paved for You to take action on my behalf toward Awakening.

May I not be anxious today.  Anxiety is just a manifestation of fear, and I know intellectually that I am in Your care, and that I have absolutely nothing to fear.  Nothing that this world can do to me can erase the protection that I feel from Your abiding love.

Thank You for showing me the feeling of You.  Your felt presence is the greatest blessing that my days bring.
