“Thus does the son of man become the Son of God. It is not really a change; it is a change of mind. Nothing external alters, but everything internal now reflects only the Love of God. (M-12.1)”
Affirmation: “I ask for a change of mind today.”
1 – Too Good to Be True?
The state of mind which is described in today’s passage may sound too good to be true, too ideal to be a realistic, practical change of mind. But we have A Course in Miracles to study, giving us the means for Awakening (from the Text).
2 – The Gender Problem
Of course, “son” and “Son” include the feminine also. In the sixties, when Helen Schuman and Bill Thetford worked together to bring ACIM to the world, the masculine gender was taught in schools to be inclusive language that also included women. This had changed by the seventies, and a sticking point for many younger individuals have been turned off by the masculine terminology. But this is a straw issue. The Bible also uses the masculine in most available translations and paraphrases. We should not let this difference cause us any concern.
3 – Reflect the Love of God
Going back to the passage again, if the internal part of us could reflect only the Love of God, would we not have the Awakening that we seek? Most of us can aspire to this ideal, but very few of us have actually sustained Awakening. Before sustainability, we will know glimpses of Awakening, periods of time that show us the way that will eventually open to us. In the meantime, we dwell with our feet on earth.
4 – A Goal for Today
To reflect the Love of God is a goal that all of us can seek to embody daily. When we fall from these heights, we can ask forgiveness of ourselves and others, and we can try again.
5 – An Even Keel
There is no other way. We walk the mundane paths of this world until we know the joy that Jesus would have us know on a sustained basis. Let us reach for the stars even as we keep our minds and hearts on the even keel of a person seeking to allow the ego to wither away.
I would reflect the love of God today. I would turn from petty problems that disturb me, to an all-encompassing thankfulness that my life is actually going so well. If I can keep from letting the ordinary stress of life bother me, I will be in the right frame of mind to express the love that I feel God wants me to express.
May we not be disturbed by the male-female problem in terminology of A Course in Miracles. The sixties were an era, now long ago, in which this scribing took place. And people thought differently about language then. In reality, we do not have to let straw issues disturb us. Jesus is inclusive of women as well as men.
May the day go well. May we enjoy the peace of a sunny day. May we know that sunny days remind us of love, and lead us to think of love. I would think of love today.
