“While there is division remaining between the self and the spacious Self, the self and the creative force, you remain in the state of maintenance rather than sustenance of Christ-consciousness. This is an acceptable state for this time of limited practice with those with whom you are engaged in this specific mountain top dialogue. It is not an acceptable state for full-scale interaction with the world.” (ACOL, D:Day15.11)
There are at least two steps in Christ-consciousness, and maybe actually three. Most of us at first glimpse Christ-consciousness for varying periods of time. These are times when we feel especially harmonious and mellow, at peace with all the world and everybody in it. The next step (explained in the passage above) is a period of time in which the personal self and the Self are at odds, not truly One. This is a time of maintenance of Christ-consciousness; we have reached Christ-consciousness, but we are not fully merged with the Self, the One, God Himself. The next step, where Jesus would have us go, is for sustainability of Christ-consciousness. This means that the little, personal self is fully One with God, the Self, fully complete and harmonious just about all the time.
This trajectory can be altered in different people. Some do immediately encounter Christ-consciousness and know not what they have encountered, sometimes searching for years for answers. They know that they have changed, and changed mightily, but they cannot articulate what that change is. Nobody else they know may have ever had such a transformation, and so they are befuddled.
The way of A Course in Miracles and A Course of Love is gentle. These works do not hurl us into reality, true reality, which is Christ-consciousness itself. We are given a slowly evolving passage to something grander. We do not cry out in terror when the light begins to shine. We thank God for this change; it does not scare us.
This is what we all want. And it will be given all of us, but God makes the decision, and His timetable is not ours. So we can and must wait patiently for the blessing to descend upon us, the blessing of Christ-consciousness.
There are things we can do to hasten the appearance of Christ-consciousness. Reading Jesus’s channeled works is a prerequisite for this gentle crossing over. Without them, we might spend years in tedious contemplation/meditation, and Jesus specifically says in ACIM that this is not necessary. We can find our way home, gently and easily. This would, in and of itself, be a good prayer for us today.
I ask that my fears leave me, and my judgments, too, so that I might provide fertile ground for Your Christ-consciousness to find a home in me. I would cease planning, unless prompted by you. I would cease attack and anger. There IS much that I can do to hasten Christ-consciousness.
May this transformation come to me at the first sign of Your willingness. Thank You.
