May Heaven Be Restored to Us

ACIM Workbook Lesson 252 – for Friday, September 9, 2011

Affirmation:  “The Son of God is my Identity.”

“My Self is holy beyond all the thoughts of holiness of which I now conceive. . . .Its strength comes not from burning impulses which move the world, but from the boundless Love of God Himself.

“Father, You know my true Identity.  Reveal It now to me who am Your Son, that I may waken to the truth in You, and know that Heaven is restored to me.  (WB420)”

Reflections:

We would have Heaven restored to us, and the sense in which the prayer for today encourages this, is the sense that Heaven can begin while we are still in this world.  We can indeed know “Heaven on earth,” though this may not be a constant state.  We will return to “lowly paths of learning” (an ACIM quotation), but we have been to the heights.  A Course of Love carries this understanding a step farther.  We are led to a mountaintop experience, and we are told that we are not meant to take this climb repeatedly.  Some of us, I would intuit, are never satisfied when we are not yet perfect.  Jesus says in A Course in Miracles that he stands at the end, to correct the mistakes that we ourselves could not correct.  A Course of Love makes plain that he is our equal (by this time), and that our learning time is over.  A Course in Miracles, as the first set of books, does not go this far.  (A Course of Love is seen by some as a sequel, channeled by Jesus to Mari Perron, to help us farther along the pathway.)

Our holy Self is not something that we can understand fully.  We do not know the Self because we are too caught up in the little self that thrives and also despairs in this world.  But we would move to knowledge (not perception) of this Self by communion with God in these Workbook lessons.  We are coming closer to God’s Way.  We will soon be out of the woods of the ego’s wily ways.

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

Help me to respond to You and to others in this world with love and understanding of where all of us are coming from.  May we listen to You through Your Universal Inspiration, the Holy Spirit.  May we live today the compassion for others that you would have us exhibit.

I would do nothing today that I would regret later on.  Help me to see evermore frequent glimpses of the Heaven on earth that You intend for us.

Amen.

Holy

ACIM Workbook Lesson 211 – for Saturday, July 30, 2011

Affirmation:  “I am not a body.  I am free.  For I am still as God created me.”

“I am the holy Son of God Himself.  (WB393)”

Reflections:

Our Selves have not changed, though our little self has known an illusory separation from God.  Our Selves are the holy Sons and Daughters of God.

Do not be afraid that such an assertion is arrogance.  Unless caught up by the ego, to believe such a wonderful promise from God is not arrogance, but the most supreme good sense.

If our personal image gets in the way, know that the Text asks us to decide that we do not know who we are.  This is the unknown identity that the Holy Spirit has been waiting for us to acknowledge.  Then we are really ready to go home–not to death, but to Heaven on earth.

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

I would know Heaven on earth today.  If I am not yet ready, today, then I ask that every step that I take today bring me closer to that glorious culmination.  I realize that this experience is borne of great joy, joy in Your love.  I do love You truly.

Help all of my brothers and sisters to take steps today that will bring them closer to You.  May I be an instrument in their progress, if You would have me be.  Lead me to know what to say and what to do in forwarding salvation, but only if the people who are in my circle are ready and want to learn from me.  I would reflect only Your words.  Teach me to follow the Holy Spirit in all my comings and goings.

Amen,

This World Is Not Home

ACIM Workbook Lesson 182 – for Friday, July 1, 2011

Affirmation:  “I will be still an instant and go home.”

“This world you seem to live in is not home to you.  And somewhere in your mind you know that this is true.  A memory of home keeps haunting you, as if there were a place that called you to return, although you do not recognize the voice, nor what it is the voice reminds you of.  Yet still you feel an alien here, from somewhere all unknown.  Nothing so definite that you could say with certainty you are an exile here  Just a persistent feeling, sometimes not more than a tiny throb, at other times hardly remembered, actively dismissed, but surely to return to mind again.  (WB339)”

Reflections:

1 – What is Home?

This passage is a favorite quotation from the Workbook.  We know of what it describes, though perhaps we do not often think of home in this way.  We are so caught by this world that memories of a world before are normally forgotten.  But we can invite these memories back in.  And we will be the better for it.

2 – In Exile

We are in exile in this world, though we have learned to love this world and all its drama.  Jesus says in the Text that the world has nothing that we want.  But do we believe this?  When he says this, he is thinking of the egoistic world that we have built, because elsewhere he also describes the happiness that can be ours, the heaven on earth, that we can experience.  Edgar Cayce described Jesus as saying that “heaven on earth” is anywhere that we are in the company of our friends, when all is at peace and we are joyous.  (Edgar was a psychic of the Twentieth Century.)

3 – Heaven on Earth

We long for the heaven that we have left behind.  We are here to bring salvation to ourselves and our brothers and sisters, and we cannot accomplish this from another world as well as from this one (an interpretation, not stated in ACIM).  May we create a heaven on earth today in our everyday lives.  Communing with God first will make this more probable.

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

When days seem long and troubled, we are very prone to realize that this world is not our real home.  When days seem easy, we can listen to the ego’s voice that tries to tell us that we are where we belong.  But we know the truth, and I would live the truth today.

Be with us all as we walk through the day together.  May our love be genuine and our joy, complete.

Amen.

There Is No Death

ACIM Workbook Lesson 177 – for Sunday, June 26, 2011

Affirmation:  “God is but Love, and therefore so am I.”

“1.  There is no death.  The Son of God is free.

“2.  Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.  (WB334)”

Reflections:

If we can believe that death is like walking through an open door (told by the Guides that Ruth Montgomery found in automatic writing), then we can have some peace about death.  We are eternal.  We do keep living.  And many psychic writings detail what life is like on the Other Side.  We are not usually changed a great deal just upon death; we carry our personalities with us (according to psychics, including Arthur Ford).  We can see in these ideas the fact that we remain free beings.  We are free when our will is not imprisoned (a Text tenet).  And our will is imprisoned only when we are living the ego.  We do know that there is another way to live, and we would find it today.

When we are One with God, our Source, then we know true joy and happiness.  God would have us happy; he is not pleased by long faces that simply seem pious.  God is a Friend, above all, but He is within (and without) us, and when we are quiet and go within, we find Him.  We do not have to wait long.  He has patiently waited for us to make the decision to go within.

Freedom is a great boon.  We are not puppets of the Holy Spirit, Who would merely guide our decisions along better lines than we can handle ourselves.  He knows the whole picture.  Let us look to Him today.

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

Thank You for assurance that there is no death.  We live on, in what surroundings we know not, but need not doubt.  When I reflect on the fact that life is truly eternal, it takes the sting out of dying, and with that goes my fear.   I thank You that I no longer fear death.  I thank You that this partakes of my mind, of my intelligence, and I do not rely on blind faith in what others have told me.  You gave me this surety.

May my brothers and sisters reach a surety about life eternal as well.  Will You guide me to say or do the right thing to bring the ones in my circle to the assurance that I feel in my bones about life after death.  Truly our family who have crossed to the Other Side are in a better place.  May we not grieve so painfully once we accept this truth with our whole minds and hearts.

Amen.

Touch of Heaven

ACIM Workbook Lesson 157 – for Monday, June 6, 2011

Affirmation:  “Into His presence would I enter now.”

“Today it will be given you to feel a touch of Heaven, though you will return to paths of learning.  Yet you have come far enough along the way to alter time sufficiently to rise above its laws, and walk into eternity a while.  This you will learn to do increasingly, as every lesson, faithfully rehearsed, brings you more swiftly to this holy place and leaves you,, for a moment, to your Self.  (WB296)”

Reflections:

1 – Day of Respite

Let us feel that touch of Heaven today.  If we have problems, let us pray (the Text says “commune”) to God, and He will see that the Holy Spirit, His communication link with us, will guide us.  Every now and then we need a day of respite.  Let today be that day for us.

2 – “Happy Dreams the Holy Spirit Brings”

Our Self is the larger Self of which we are a part.  It is the part that has never come to earth (an interpretation, not stated in ACIM).  This larger Self guides and controls from a greater vantage point, and, if we live in close proximity to the Holy Spirit, we will soon come to understand what we need to say or do to have the “happy dreams the Holy Spirit brings” (an ACIM quotation).

3 -Walk into Eternity

Let us “walk into eternity” today.  We can invite the peace, joy, and aliveness that we are meant to have.  And these blessings do not have to come to us only one day.  We can live them continually, as God would have us to do,  In the passage above, we are bade to study ACIM thoroughly, as these magnificent volumes are “our” way, the way among many.  This course does work for those who work it.  May we do no less, and may the peace of God which transcends understanding, come into our lives on a constant basis.

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

I would so live today that I am prepared to feel a touch of Heaven.  I know that I do not have to do much to prepare; that is the Holy Spirit’s role–to prepare me.  But may I be open to His guidance and direction, and not let the usual, normal stresses of the day take away my resolve to find Heaven in this world.

Thank You for giving me the direction that I feel now, and that You, more often than not, influence me to feel.  I need Your direction, whether directly or through Your Communicator, the Holy Spirit.  Help me to walk the true and good pathway today.

Amen.

Heaven = My Decision

ACIM Workbook Lesson 149 – for Sunday, May 29, 2011

Affirmation:  “My mind holds only what I think with God.”

Selected Passage:

“When I am healed I am not healed alone.
“Heaven is the decision I must make.  (WB277)’

Reflections:

ACIM makes the astonishing statement that a thousand are healed along with us.  This statement assumes the psychic, the truth that this is an open universe.  If we would not be healed for ourselves alone, perhaps out of masochism, then let us be healed for the sake of those we love, our brothers and sisters in Christ.

We must make the decision for Heaven.  Heaven is possible even in this world.  Edgar Cayce psychically tuned into the Last Supper, and he has Jesus affirming that Heaven is when we are gathered together with those we love (as Jesus was at that point).  Heaven is our birthright, our inheritance.  We do not have to wait until after death to enjoy its boons.  We can enjoy Heaven today, right now.  We need only invite quiet and calm, and turn within to God.  We need also to be “in the flow” (an idea developed by Ruth Montgomery).  This state of flow comes when we follow intuition to the degree that we can.  Sometimes our bodies rebel, and at such times we should not push (an idea developed by Shakti Gawain in Living in the Light).

Our real thoughts are those that we think with God.  They do not include the negative expressions of anger and attack.  Thinking with God is an enormously freeing concept, and it comes easily to the open mind.  Thinking with God is also the easiest way to live.  We must simply express our desire to manage this way of thinking, and it is ours.  We do not need to wait.  Indeed, in this world there is little in the intangible for which we need to wait.

Prayer:

Dear Mother/Father,

I would choose today, as every day, to be at home with You in Heaven on this earth.  You have hinted at this possibility throughout A Course in Miracles, and I would claim that promise immediately.  I do not have to wait for the Other Side, after death.

When I am feeling Your presence, surrounded by a sense of love, then all is well in this world.  That is the Heaven on earth that I would find, and I know that this is Your will for me as well.  Thank You for making it so plain to me.

Amen.

Heaven = A Decision

ACIM Workbook Lesson 138 – for Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Affirmation:  “Heaven is the decision I must make.”

Selected Passage:

“Choosing depends on learning.  And the truth cannot be learned, but only recognized.  In recognition its acceptance lies, and as it is accepted it is known.  But knowledge is beyond the goals we seek to teach within the framework of this course.  Ours are teaching goals, to be attained through learning how to reach them, what they are, and what they offer you.  Decisions are the outcome of your learning, for they rest on what you have accepted as the truth of what you are, and what your needs must be.  (WB264)”

Reflections:

This passage makes a distinction between learning, which is within the framework of ACIM; and knowledge, which is God’s gift to us, and beyond what ACIM aims to teach.  God gives knowledge through revelation, and revelation is always one-way (from God to us).  Miracles, however, can facilitate learning of ACIM, being perceptual.  Since miracles are perceptual, they do not last–but they can be great blessings in their time.  Revelation is intensely personal, and not meaningfully conveyed to another (a Text tenet).

Jesus says, in the early pages of the Text, that revelation may occasionally reveal the end to us, but to get there the means are needed.  And the means are being carefully explained in A Course in Miracles.  We need only study easily and peacefully, never frantically.  Salvation can be ours.  Learning ACIM will make it so, but salvation cannot be coerced from the Holy Spirit.  Demands made of God are never the right focus (an interpretation, not stated in ACIM).

When our decisions have been cleansed of egoistic leanings, we will be well on our way home.  We will know salvation, and eventually we will know Awakening.  Let us pray for both today.

Prayer:

Dear Mother/Father,

I would know Heaven on earth today.  I would not seek to make demands of You; I do know that Heaven, experience in the Now, is Your will for me.  As much as this world throws at me, I do not have to suffer without relief.  You are always waiting with Your counsel.

Be with me today as I go about my little part of this world.  May I enjoy the pleasures that are there, but may I realize that I am actually enjoying illusions.  May I enter into Your reality, Your real world.  Thank You for hearing my prayer.

Amen.

Why Wait for Heaven?

ACIM Workbook Lesson 131 – for Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Affirmation:  “No one can fail who seeks to reach the truth.”

Selected Passage:

“{S]earching is inevitable here.  For this you came, and you will surely do the thing you came for.  But the world can not dictate the goal for which you search, unless you give it power to do so.  Otherwise, you still are free to choose a goal that lies beyond the world and every worldly thought, and one that comes to you from an idea relinquished yet remembered, old yet new, an echo of a heritage forgot, yet holding everything you really want. . . .

“Why wait for Heaven?  It is here today.  Time is the great illusion it is past or in the future.  (WB239, 240)”

Reflections:

1 – Heaven is Here and Now

Heaven is here and now.  We do not always believe this, and to the extent that we doubt it, then we do not see Heaven.  We will resume our search for Heaven, sometimes finding it and sometimes not.  It does not matter.  The will to find Heaven is all that is needed.  And God will guide every step.

2 – Why Do We Struggle?

Why do we search so long and hard?  Why do we struggle so?  A Course in Miracles outlines an easy approach to Heaven.  Its learning is not difficult, and, in fact, in one place in the Text the approach of ACIM is characterized as “simple.”  It is simple to the mind that has given itself over to the Holy Spirit for guidance.  Nobody who depends on this guidance needs to remain in conflict and confusion.  There is a better way, a different way, and ACIM guides us to find that new way.

3 – A Word from Edgar Cayce

Heaven is here and now.  A reading by Edgar Cayce retold the scene of the Last Supper in which Jesus is said to have made the assertion that Heaven is here and now, among our friends and dining in peace–even though turmoil awaited him and his followers.  If we believe Jesus’s words, we can be at peace.  We do not have to struggle.  This struggle has been our own confusion, and we can leave confusion behind at any time by consistently following guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer:

Dear Mother/Father,

I would enter Heaven on earth today.  I would not entertain thoughts of anger or attack, insecurity or disillusionment, negativism or overconfidence.  I would choose the Heaven on earth that You have prepared for me now.  Let me be satisfied with nothing less today.

If I stumble and fall today, please pick me up.  Your will for me is that I succeed in the things that are important to eternity–the love, the peace, the joy.  I would leave behind the worldly trappings of success as not important enough to clutter my mind.  I would not choose to ignore You by a fruitless searching after “success.”  There is no success that will make me happy if I try to live without You and Your guidance.

Amen.

You Have Never Left Heaven

“There is no need for help to enter Heaven for you have never left.  But there is need for help beyond yourself as you are circumscribed by false beliefs of your Identity, Which God alone established in reality.  Helpers are given you in many forms, although upon the altar they are one.  (M87)”

Affirmation:  “May I recognize my Helpers.”

Reflections:

This is a lovely passage, but one that may be hard to believe.  Have we really never left Heaven?  It certainly seems that we have.

The passage refers to the larger Self of which we are a part; this Self has indeed never left Heaven.  The “false beliefs of your Identity” refer to the falling into the egoic state of mind, from which we would escape.  We can escape by turning to the Helpers given us–the Holy Spirit (of primary importance), Jesus, other brothers and sisters, the Course itself, and the like.  We are not alone in this world, and we would do well to reach out for help back Home.

It is a very loving thought to realize that we have never left Heaven.  If we keep this one point in mind, it will lead us to the “limitless release” and “pure joy” that the Course speaks about elsewhere.

Dear Father/Mother,

May I realize the beauty of the fact that my Self has never left Heaven.  Thank You for this reassurance.  May I know where to turn and what to do to realize Heaven.

I appreciate the reassurance that You offer me continually.  Help me to live through this day and to make of it a good day.

Amen.

Workbook Lesson for Day 86:

These ideas are for review today:

Only God’s plan for salvation will work.

Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.

The Prayer of the Heart

“It is impossible that the prayer of the heart remain unanswered in the perception of the one who asks.  If he asks for the impossible, if he wants what does not exist or seeks for illusions in his heart, all this becomes his own.  The power of his decision offers it to him as he requests.  Herein lie hell and Heaven.  (M53)”

Affirmation:  “May my prayer of the heart always ask for Heaven.”

Reflections:

Few of us know our hearts well.  We sometimes ask for things that we really don’t want, and yet in our hearts, we do, and then these prayers are answered.  Elsewhere Jesus assures us that God will protect us from danger in prayers that are really bad for us.  So even in the prayer of the heart we are protected..

We may not realize that we are protected, though.  We may, since projection makes perception (a Course tenet), find that erroneously we are in a situation that we didn’t think we asked for.  Yet, we did, on some level.  This is a particularly difficult concept when we are dealing with painful issues in our lives or in the world.

Elsewhere the Course says that we can believe what nobody else believes to be true, because in our perception, we have made it true for ourselves.  Particularly do we find this in emotional matters, but it is true in the physical as well.  This is not a “blame the victim” mentality, because we are not being punished, however much it may appear that we are.  God does not  punish, however much we may think punishment is warranted.  Our own decisions give us hell or Heaven.  That puts us in the driver’s seat, a very good place to be if we are attuned to God’s power and His way.

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

May I know that You protect me always, even when I ask for things that would not be good for me.  Jesus assures me of this.  Yet my own perception can seem to give me bad things.  May my perception of my world be cleansed.

Thank You for helping through the confusions of this world.  I know that You love me always, and in that I will be protected.

Amen.

Heaven vs. Hell

“Pray for God’s justice, and do not confuse His mercy with your own insanity.  Perception can make whatever picture the mind desires to see.  Remember this.  In this lies either Heaven or hell, as you elect.  (M50)”

Affirmation:  “May my perception make only Heaven.”

Reflections:

It is a tenet of the Course that projection makes perception.  This may  be difficult to understand, but this passage clarifies the issue:  “Perception can make whatever picture the mind desires to see.”  Jesus declares that in this lies Heaven or hell, as we elect.

This understanding puts our life situation back in our own hands.  It is how we see the world, how we interpret it, that determines how we will experience it.  Our own insanity has made of this world a hell, and we surely do not wish to stay in this perception.

We are told elsewhere that it is not up to us to judge our brother or sister.  God’s justice is wholly that they are innocent people, as are we, people who are doing the best that they can, given the understanding that they have at any given moment.  Our understanding can help them to follow God’s way.

Prayer:

Dear Father/Mother,

May my perception be cleansed, so that I elect to see only Heaven.  This does not mean that I deny insane things that I see, but it does mean that I choose to see their unreality.  This world is illusory, as the Course teaches me.

Help me to see Heaven in my everyday world.  Help me not to get lost in dreams that are essentially insane.

Amen.
