“The deepest level of the unconscious is shared as an ability. As miracle-mindedness, the content—or the particular miracles which an individual happens to perform—does not matter at all. They will, in fact, be entirely different, since I direct them, because I make a point of avoiding redundancy. Unless a miracle actually heals, it is not a miracle at all. The content of the miracle level is not recorded in the individual’s unconscious because if it were, the miracle would not be automatic or involuntary, which we have said repeatedly that it should be. However, the content is a matter for the record, which is not within the individual himself.” (ACIM, COA ed., T-2.XI.4:1-6)
The “record” is the long list of happenings that are personal to us, and that are kept in the cosmos. Often this record is called the “akashic records.” This is somewhat separate from our unconscious mind, a thought that we may not have realized.
Here Jesus goes to some pains to impress upon us that he is directing miracles, that he is not repeating the same miracle with different people, and that we ourselves are not supposed to attempt miracles of our own volition.
Miracles are healing, and when they do not happen, something has gone wrong. This in itself is a major insight as well as cause for rejoicing. Miracles ought to happen, Jesus seems to be saying. Can we not just benefit from that assertion?
This somewhat lengthy quotation is not easy to understand, and perhaps we can well see why Helen deleted a good bit of the ideas from the editions that she developed. Here, in the complete version, we see that the unconscious is viewed differently by Jesus from Jung, who thought that his collective unconscious was shared by all minds. Jesus is at first talking to psychologists, Helen and Bill, and so the more academic approach to the unconscious would have made perfect sense to them.
We can focus on the miracle-mindedness that Jesus promulgates. We can rest in the knowledge that if we need a miracle, we need only ask. If we have met the conditions that Jesus places upon us (these differ from individual to individual) then we will find ourselves a recipient of a miracle. Our expectation actually helps along the process.
Let’s watch our mind and heart to allow the cosmos to etch good happenings in our akashic records.
