A Warning about Being Defensive

Forget not, when you feel the need arise to be defensive about anything, you have identified yourself with an illusion.  And therefore feel that you are weak because you are alone.  This is the cost of all illusions.  Not one but rests on the belief that you are separate.”  (A Course in Miracles, FIP ed., T-22.V.6)

I think the assertion about being defensive is worth a great deal.  Jesus knows what he is talking about.   We are also told, elsewhere, that defensive behavior brings on what we are trying to defend against.  This seems to me to be an example of the law of attraction, bringing aspects of fear to us because our trust in God has become too weak.

We are not alone in this world.  Our brothers and sisters are with us, and of course God is always present, living through us, found deep within each of us.  But if we push other people and even God away because we are identifying with the illusion of defensiveness, we will suffer.  It is not God who ever causes suffering in His children, but there are laws of give and take that keep everything in order.  We sometimes, like here with defensiveness, find ourselves misreading these benign laws.

Throw off any evidence of weakness.  A child of God is not weak, regardless of what in the inner being or outside is happening. Live peaceably with God’s blessing.
